RealNetworks RealPlayer up to 11.1 ParseKnownType numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in RealNetworks RealPlayer up to 11.1 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been classified as very critical. This affects the function ParseKnownType. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-189. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple integer overflows in the ParseKnownType function in RealNetworks RealPlayer 11.0 through 11.1 and RealPlayer SP 1.0 through 1.1.4 on Windows allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted (1) HX_FLV_META_AMF_TYPE_MIXEDARRAY or (2) HX_FLV_META_AMF_TYPE_ARRAY data in an FLV file.

The weakness was presented 08/30/2010 by Behrang Fouladi (TippingPoint) with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-3000 since 08/13/2010. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/24/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.

A public exploit has been developed by Abysssec in Python and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 48907 (RealPlayer for Windows < Build 12.0.0.879 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118442 (RealPlayer Update for Multiple Vulnerabilities).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10464.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (61423), Exploit-DB (14992), Tenable (48907), SecurityFocus (BID 42775†) and Secunia (SA41096†).
