Apple QuickTime up to 7.6.6 QTPlugin.ocx Read code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation leads to code injection. This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2010-1818. Additionally, an exploit exists. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple QuickTime up to 7.6.6 (Multimedia Player Software) and classified as very critical. This issue affects the function IPersistPropertyBag2::Read of the file QTPlugin.ocx. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The IPersistPropertyBag2::Read function in QTPlugin.ocx in Apple QuickTime 6.x, 7.x before 7.6.8, and other versions allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via the _Marshaled_pUnk attribute, which triggers unmarshaling of an untrusted pointer.

The weakness was released 08/31/2010 by Haifei Li with Fortinet's FortiGuard Labs (Website). The advisory is shared at metasploit.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-1818. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/30/2025). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49260 (QuickTime < 7.6.8 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Windows)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118445 (Apple QuickTime "_Marshaled_pUnk" Backdoor Param Client-Side Arbitrary Code Execution Vulnerability (HT4339)).

Upgrading to version 7.6.7 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10407.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (61484), Exploit-DB (14843), Tenable (49260), SecurityFocus (BID 42774†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-26949†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-65890. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
