Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). This issue affects the function xfs_swapext. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
The xfs_swapext function in fs/xfs/xfs_dfrag.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.35 does not properly check the file descriptors passed to the SWAPEXT ioctl, which allows local users to leverage write access and obtain read access by swapping one file into another file.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was published 09/03/2010 by Dan Rosenberg as Bug 605158 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-2226 since 06/09/2010. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1628 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51158 (SuSE 10 Security Update : the Linux kernel (ZYPP Patch Number 7257)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165622 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux kernel (SUSE-SA:2010:060)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (51158), SecurityFocus (BID 40920†), Secunia (SA43315†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-26825†).
