Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 snd_hdsp_hwdep_ioctl information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is the function snd_hdsp_hwdep_ioctl. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

The snd_hdsp_hwdep_ioctl function in sound/pci/rme9652/hdsp.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.36-rc6 does not initialize a certain structure, which allows local users to obtain potentially sensitive information from kernel stack memory via an SNDRV_HDSP_IOCTL_GET_CONFIG_INFO ioctl call.

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was presented 11/30/2010 by Dan Rosenberg as Bug 648669 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-4080. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

The exploit is available at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1716 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51786 (CentOS 4 : kernel (CESA-2011:0162)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165622 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux kernel (SUSE-SA:2010:060)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (51786), SecurityFocus (BID 45063†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-28476†). See VDB-55571, VDB-55569, VDB-55563 and VDB-55558 for similar entries. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
