Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function sisfb_ioctl. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
The sisfb_ioctl function in drivers/video/sis/sis_main.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.36-rc6 does not properly initialize a certain structure member, which allows local users to obtain potentially sensitive information from kernel stack memory via an FBIOGET_VBLANK ioctl call.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was presented 11/29/2010 by Dan Rosenberg as Bug 648665 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-4078. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1715 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50825 (Debian DSA-2126-1 : linux-2.6 - privilege escalation/denial of service/information leak), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165622 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux kernel (SUSE-SA:2010:060)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (50825), SecurityFocus (BID 43810†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-28474†). See VDB-55571, VDB-55569, VDB-55568 and VDB-55564 for similar entries. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
