Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). This affects the function gfs2_rename. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-189. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The gfs2_dirent_find_space function in fs/gfs2/dir.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.35 uses an incorrect size value in calculations associated with sentinel directory entries, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and panic) and possibly have unspecified other impact by renaming a file in a GFS2 filesystem, related to the gfs2_rename function in fs/gfs2/ops_inode.c.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was shared 09/08/2010 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-2798. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1633 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50925 (SuSE 11 Security Update : Linux kernel (SAT Patch Numbers 3358 / 3361 / 3362)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118763 (Fedora Update for Kernel (FEDORA-2010-13058)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org.
