Linux Kernel 2.6.16.59 drm_ioctl information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.59. This vulnerability affects the function drm_ioctl. Executing a manipulation can lead to information disclosure. This vulnerability is registered as CVE-2010-2803. No exploit is available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.59 (Operating System). This vulnerability affects the function drm_ioctl. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

The drm_ioctl function in drivers/gpu/drm/drm_drv.c in the Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) subsystem in the Linux kernel before 2.6.27.53, 2.6.32.x before 2.6.32.21, 2.6.34.x before 2.6.34.6, and 2.6.35.x before 2.6.35.4 allows local users to obtain potentially sensitive information from kernel memory by requesting a large memory-allocation amount.

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was published 09/08/2010 by Kees Cook as Bug 621435 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-2803. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1633 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75549 (openSUSE Security Update : kernel (openSUSE-SU-2010:0634-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165607 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2010:041)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (75549), SecurityFocus (BID 42577†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-26987†). Similar entries are available at VDB-54842, VDB-54801, VDB-54793 and VDB-54791. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
