Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 compat_mc_getsockopt memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 and classified as problematic. The impacted element is the function compat_mc_getsockopt. Such manipulation leads to memory corruption. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-3081. Moreover, an exploit is present.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function compat_mc_getsockopt. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The compat_alloc_user_space functions in include/asm/compat.h files in the Linux kernel before 2.6.36-rc4-git2 on 64-bit platforms do not properly allocate the userspace memory required for the 32-bit compatibility layer, which allows local users to gain privileges by leveraging the ability of the compat_mc_getsockopt function (aka the MCAST_MSFILTER getsockopt support) to control a certain length value, related to a "stack pointer underflow" issue, as exploited in the wild in September 2010.

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was disclosed 09/24/2010 by Ben Hawkes as Bug 634457 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-3081 since 08/20/2010. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1649 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68103 (Oracle Linux 5 : kernel (ELSA-2010-0704)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165607 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2010:041)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (15024), Zero-Day.cz (224), Tenable (68103), SecurityFocus (BID 43239†) and Secunia (SA42384†). The entries VDB-54801, VDB-54793, VDB-54791 and VDB-54643 are pretty similar. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
