Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 tcf_skbedit_dump resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function tcf_skbedit_dump. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The actions implementation in the network queueing functionality in the Linux kernel before 2.6.36-rc2 does not properly initialize certain structure members when performing dump operations, which allows local users to obtain potentially sensitive information from kernel memory via vectors related to (1) the tcf_gact_dump function in net/sched/act_gact.c, (2) the tcf_mirred_dump function in net/sched/act_mirred.c, (3) the tcf_nat_dump function in net/sched/act_nat.c, (4) the tcf_simp_dump function in net/sched/act_simple.c, and (5) the tcf_skbedit_dump function in net/sched/act_skbedit.c.

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was released 09/21/2010 by Eugene Teo (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at patchwork.ozlabs.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-2942. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1646 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68172 (Oracle Linux 5 : Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2010-2008)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165607 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2010:041)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (68172), SecurityFocus (BID 42529†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-27318†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-55628, VDB-54842, VDB-54801 and VDB-54800. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
