The xfs_ioc_fsgetxattr function in fs/xfs/linux-2.6/xfs_ioctl.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.36-rc4 does not initialize a certain structure member, which allows local users to obtain potentially sensitive information from kernel stack memory via an ioctl call.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was presented 09/21/2010 by Dan Rosenberg as Bug 630804 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-3078. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1646 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50807 (CentOS 5 : kernel (CESA-2010:0839)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165607 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2010:041)).
