Oracle VM 2.2.1 privileges management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Oracle VM 2.2.1. This issue affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Unspecified vulnerability in the OracleVM component in Oracle VM 2.2.1 allows remote authenticated users to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability via unknown vectors related to ovs-agent. NOTE: the previous information was obtained from the October 2010 CPU. Oracle has not commented on claims from a third party researcher that this is related to the exposure of unspecified functions using XML-RPC.

The weakness was released 10/14/2010 by Metasploit with Onapsis (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-3585 since 09/20/2010. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68878 (OracleVM 2.2 : ovs-agent (OVMSA-2010-0015)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family OracleVM Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19589 (Oracle Database October 2010 Security Update Multiple Vulnerabilities).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (62484), Exploit-DB (16915), Tenable (68878), SecurityFocus (BID 44047†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-27682†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-4203, VDB-51863, VDB-51862 and VDB-51861. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
