A vulnerability has been found in Sun OpenOffice up to 3.1.1 (Office Suite Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Table Property. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. Integer underflow in filter/ww8/ww8par2.cxx in OpenOffice.org (OOo) before 3.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted sprmTDefTable table property modifier in a Word document.
The weakness was disclosed 02/16/2010 by Sebastian Apelt with VUPEN (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-3301 since 09/22/2009. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44598 (CentOS 3 / 4 / 5 : openoffice.org (CESA-2010:0101)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165587 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update OpenOffice.org (SUSE-SA:2010:017)).
Upgrading to version 1.1.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11506.
