Details
A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in RealNetworks RealPlayer up to 11.1 (Multimedia Player Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component ActiveX Control. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
An ActiveX control in RealNetworks RealPlayer 11.0 through 11.1, RealPlayer SP 1.0 through 1.1.4, and RealPlayer Enterprise 2.1.2 does not properly initialize an unspecified object component during parsing of a CDDA URI, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (uninitialized pointer dereference and application crash) via a long URI.
The weakness was presented 10/18/2010 by Sebastian Apelt (TippingPoint) with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared for download at zerodayinitiative.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-3747. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/27/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.
It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 48907 (RealPlayer for Windows < Build 12.0.0.879 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118442 (RealPlayer Update for Multiple Vulnerabilities).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10057.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (48907), SecurityFocus (BID 44144†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-27828†). See VDB-55112, VDB-55111, VDB-55110 and VDB-55109 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
