A vulnerability has been found in Artifex Gpl Ghostscript 8.63 (Document Processing Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function gs_type2_interpret. The gs_type2_interpret function in Ghostscript allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (incorrect pointer dereference and application crash) via crafted font data in a compressed data stream, aka bug 691043.

The weakness was presented 10/23/2010 by Paul Szabo as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-4054 since 10/22/2010. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68451 (Oracle Linux 4 : ghostscript (ELSA-2012-0096)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350705 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for ghostscript: ALAS-2012-042).
