Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Poppler (Document Reader Software). This affects the function FoFiType1::parse. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The FoFiType1::parse function in fofi/FoFiType1.cc in the PDF parser in xpdf before 3.02pl5, poppler 0.8.7 and possibly other versions up to 0.15.1, kdegraphics, and possibly other products allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a PDF file with a crafted PostScript Type1 font that contains a negative array index, which bypasses input validation and triggers memory corruption.
The weakness was released 11/05/2010 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared at cgit.freedesktop.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-3704. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49936 (CentOS 5 : poppler (CESA-2010:0749)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 390015 (Oracle VM Server for x86 Security Update for poppler (OVMSA-2017-0147)).
Upgrading to version 0.14.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cgit.freedesktop.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component.
