A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Office up to Xp (Office Suite Software) and classified as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Microsoft Office XP SP3, Office 2003 SP3, Office 2007 SP2, Office 2010, Office 2004 and 2008 for Mac, Office for Mac 2011, and Open XML File Format Converter for Mac allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an Office document containing an Office Art Drawing record with crafted msofbtSp records and unspecified flags, which triggers memory corruption, aka "Office Art Drawing Records Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 11/17/2003. The weakness was disclosed 11/09/2010 by Dyon Balding with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-3334 since 09/14/2010. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/29/2021).
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2549 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50531 (MS10-087: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2423930) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110102 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS10-087)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10633.
