Details
A vulnerability has been found in FreeType (Software Library) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function Ins_SHZ of the file ttinterp.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the Ins_SHZ function in ttinterp.c in FreeType 2.4.3 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted SHZ bytecode instruction, related to TrueType opcodes, as demonstrated by a PDF document with a crafted embedded font.
The weakness was presented 11/26/2010 by Chris Evans (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-3814 since 10/07/2010. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75505 (openSUSE Security Update : freetype2 (openSUSE-SU-2011:0361-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165464 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for freetype2 (SUSE-SU-2012:0553-1)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
