A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Citrix Xen 3.4.0/4.0.0/4.1.0 (Connectivity Software). This issue affects an unknown code. Xen 3.4, 4.0, and 4.1, when the guest OS has not registered a handler for a syscall or sysenter instruction, does not properly clear a flag for exception injection when injecting a General Protection Fault, which allows local PV guest OS users to cause a denial of service (guest crash) by later triggering an exception that would normally be handled within Xen.
The weakness was published 06/12/2012 as Xen Security Advisory 8 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.xen.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-0218 since 12/14/2011. Attacking locally is a requirement. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59779 (Debian DSA-2501-1 : xen - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370050 (Citrix XenServer Security Update (CTX133161)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.citrix.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
