Intel CPU on 64-bit Ring-0 General Protection Exception memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Intel CPU on 64-bit. It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Ring-0. Performing a manipulation as part of General Protection Exception results in memory corruption. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-0217. The attack needs to be approached locally. In addition, an exploit is available. To fix this issue, it is recommended to deploy a patch.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Intel CPU on 64-bit (Chip Software) (version unknown). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown function of the component Ring-0. The manipulation as part of a General Protection Exception leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The x86-64 kernel system-call functionality in Xen 4.1.2 and earlier, as used in Citrix XenServer 6.0.2 and earlier and other products; Oracle Solaris 11 and earlier; illumos before r13724; Joyent SmartOS before 20120614T184600Z; FreeBSD before 9.0-RELEASE-p3; NetBSD 6.0 Beta and earlier; Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 and R2 SP1 and Windows 7 Gold and SP1; and possibly other operating systems, when running on an Intel processor, incorrectly uses the sysret path in cases where a certain address is not a canonical address, which allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application. NOTE: because this issue is due to incorrect use of the Intel specification, it should have been split into separate identifiers; however, there was some value in preserving the original mapping of the multi-codebase coordinated-disclosure effort to a single identifier.

The bug was discovered 06/12/2012. The weakness was presented 06/12/2012 by Rafal Wojtczuk with SuSE (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.xen.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-0217 since 12/14/2011. Attacking locally is a requirement. The successful exploitation requires a authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at kb.cert.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 42 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74682 (openSUSE Security Update : xen (openSUSE-SU-2012:0886-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370050 (Citrix XenServer Security Update (CTX133161)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kb.cert.org. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (28718), Tenable (74682), SecurityFocus (BID 53856†), OSVDB (82949†) and Secunia (SA55082†).
