Details
A vulnerability has been found in FreeBSD 9.0 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:
The x86-64 kernel system-call functionality in Xen 4.1.2 and earlier, as used in Citrix XenServer 6.0.2 and earlier and other products; Oracle Solaris 11 and earlier; illumos before r13724; Joyent SmartOS before 20120614T184600Z; FreeBSD before 9.0-RELEASE-p3; NetBSD 6.0 Beta and earlier; Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 and R2 SP1 and Windows 7 Gold and SP1; and possibly other operating systems, when running on an Intel processor, incorrectly uses the sysret path in cases where a certain address is not a canonical address, which allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application. NOTE: because this issue is due to incorrect use of the Intel specification, it should have been split into separate identifiers; however, there was some value in preserving the original mapping of the multi-codebase coordinated-disclosure effort to a single identifier.
The bug was discovered 06/12/2012. The weakness was disclosed 06/12/2012 by Rafal Wojtczuk and John Baldwin with SuSE as FreeBSD-SA-12:04.sysret as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at security.freebsd.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-0217 since 12/14/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74682 (openSUSE Security Update : xen (openSUSE-SU-2012:0886-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370050 (Citrix XenServer Security Update (CTX133161)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at security.freebsd.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (28718), Tenable (74682), SecurityFocus (BID 53856†), OSVDB (82949†) and Secunia (SA49518†). The entries VDB-5523, VDB-5525, VDB-5555 and VDB-5556 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
