A vulnerability was found in Apache Tomcat (Application Server Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the file sessionsList.jsp. The manipulation of the argument sort with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. Impacted is integrity. Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in the Manager application in Apache Tomcat 6.0.12 through 6.0.29 and 7.0.0 through 7.0.4 allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the (1) orderBy or (2) sort parameter to sessionsList.jsp, or unspecified input to (3) sessionDetail.jsp or (4) java/org/apache/catalina/manager/JspHelper.java, related to use of untrusted web applications.
The weakness was presented 11/26/2010 by DiGiT (Website). The advisory is shared at tomcat.apache.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-4172. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:sessionsList.jsp it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75760 (openSUSE Security Update : tomcat6 (openSUSE-SU-2011:0082-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86931 (Apache Tomcat Multiple Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerabilities).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
