Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 mos7840_ioctl information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). This issue affects the function mos7840_ioctl. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The USB subsystem in the Linux kernel before 2.6.36-rc5 does not properly initialize certain structure members, which allows local users to obtain potentially sensitive information from kernel stack memory via vectors related to TIOCGICOUNT ioctl calls, and the (1) mos7720_ioctl function in drivers/usb/serial/mos7720.c and (2) mos7840_ioctl function in drivers/usb/serial/mos7840.c.

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was shared 11/29/2010 by Dan Rosenberg as Bug 648659 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-4074. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1715 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 50825 (Debian DSA-2126-1 : linux-2.6 - privilege escalation/denial of service/information leak), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155446 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Kernel (ELSA-2011-0007)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (50825), SecurityFocus (BID 45074†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-28473†). The entries VDB-55569, VDB-55564, VDB-55563 and VDB-55542 are related to this item. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
