OpenSSL up to 0.9.x Session Identifier cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This vulnerability is referenced as CVE-2008-7270. No exploit is available. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in OpenSSL up to 0.9.x (Network Encryption Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component Session Identifier. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is integrity. CVE summarizes:

OpenSSL before 0.9.8j, when SSL_OP_NETSCAPE_REUSE_CIPHER_CHANGE_BUG is enabled, does not prevent modification of the ciphersuite in the session cache, which allows remote attackers to force the use of a disabled cipher via vectors involving sniffing network traffic to discover a session identifier, a different vulnerability than CVE-2010-4180.

The weakness was published 12/06/2010 as Bug 659462 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-7270. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68163 (Oracle Linux 4 : openssl (ELSA-2010-0977)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119749 (VMware Third Party Component Updates for VMware vCenter Server, vCenter Update Manager (VMSA-2011-0013)).

Upgrading to version 0.9.6a eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (68163), SecurityFocus (BID 45254†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-28615†). Similar entry is available at VDB-56209. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
