Details
A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function ethtool_get_rxnfc. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
The ethtool_get_rxnfc function in net/core/ethtool.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.36 does not initialize a certain block of heap memory, which allows local users to obtain potentially sensitive information via an ETHTOOL_GRXCLSRLALL ethtool command with a large info.rule_cnt value, a different vulnerability than CVE-2010-2478.
The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was shared 12/10/2010 by Kees Cook (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-3861. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1726 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68177 (Oracle Linux 6 : kernel (ELSA-2011-0007)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165548 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Linux Kernel (SUSE-SA:2011:004)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (68177), SecurityFocus (BID 44427†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-29154†).
