The list_directory function in Lib/SimpleHTTPServer.py in SimpleHTTPServer in Python before 2.5.6c1, 2.6.x before 2.6.7 rc2, and 2.7.x before 2.7.2 does not place a charset parameter in the Content-Type HTTP header, which makes it easier for remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks against Internet Explorer 7 via UTF-7 encoding.

The weakness was disclosed 06/19/2012 as 11442 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.python.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-4940 since 12/23/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68546 (Oracle Linux 5 : python (ELSA-2012-0745)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350649 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for python26: ALAS-2012-098).

Applying the patch SimpleHTTPServer-fix-2.7.patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at bugs.python.org.
