IBM Lotus Notes up to 8.5.3 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in IBM Lotus Notes up to 8.5.3 (Groupware Software). This issue affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The URL handler in IBM Lotus Notes 8.x before 8.5.3 FP2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted notes:// URL.

The weakness was presented 06/18/2012 by Moritz Jodeit as swg21598348 as confirmed bulletin (IBM Knowledge Base). The advisory is shared at www-304.ibm.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-2174 since 04/04/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/02/2025). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed by metasploit and been published 7 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 61487 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120298 (IBM Lotus Notes URL Command Injection Remote Code Execution Vulnerability).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11839.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (75320), Exploit-DB (23650), Tenable (61487), SecurityFocus (BID 54070†) and OSVDB (83063†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
