A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 8.0 (Web Browser). Affected is the function nsHTMLSelectElement of the file nsHTMLSelectElement.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Use-after-free vulnerability in the nsHTMLSelectElement function in nsHTMLSelectElement.cpp in Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 8.0, Thunderbird 5.0 through 8.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.6 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors involving removal of the parent node of an element.
The weakness was shared 06/18/2012 by regenrecht with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative as MFSA2012-41 as confirmed advisory (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-3671 since 09/23/2011. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a private exploit are known.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 802874 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
