Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Wireshark 1.4.2 (Packet Analyzer Software). This affects the function sect_enttec_dmx_da of the file epan/dissectors/packet-enttec.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in the sect_enttec_dmx_da function in epan/dissectors/packet-enttec.c in Wireshark 1.4.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted ENTTEC DMX packet with Run Length Encoding (RLE) compression.
The weakness was published 12/31/2010 as Bug 5539 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugs.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-4538 since 12/09/2010. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/20/2024).
A public exploit has been developed in Python. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68179 (Oracle Linux 4 / 5 / 6 : wireshark (ELSA-2011-0013)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks.
