A vulnerability has been found in GNU GIMP 2.6.11 (Image Processing Software) and classified as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function loadit of the file plug-ins/common/sphere-designer.c of the component Configuration File. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Stack-based buffer overflow in the loadit function in plug-ins/common/sphere-designer.c in the SPHERE DESIGNER plugin in GIMP 2.6.11 allows user-assisted remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a long "Number of lights" field in a plugin configuration file. NOTE: it may be uncommon to obtain a GIMP plugin configuration file from an untrusted source that is separate from the distribution of the plugin itself.
The weakness was published 01/03/2011 as Bug 666793 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-4541 since 12/09/2010. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication.
