Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8. Affected is an unknown function of the component Data Access Components. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8 SP1 and SP2, and Windows Data Access Components (WDAC) 6.0, does not properly validate memory allocation for internal data structures, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code, possibly via a large CacheSize property that triggers an integer wrap and a buffer overflow, aka "ADO Record Memory Vulnerability." NOTE: this might be a duplicate of CVE-2010-1117 or CVE-2010-1118.
The weakness was presented 01/11/2011 by Peter Vreugdenhil (TippingPoint) with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-0027. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 01/26/2025).
The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51455 (MS11-002: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Data Access Components Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2451910)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90677 (Microsoft Data Access Components Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS11-002)).
A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10761.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (64342), Tenable (51455), SecurityFocus (BID 45698†), OSVDB (70444†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1024947†). See VDB-4238, VDB-52372 and VDB-54553 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
