A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (affected version not known) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality in the library fveapi.dll of the file sdclt.exe. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a missing encryption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-311. The product does not encrypt sensitive or critical information before storage or transmission. Untrusted search path vulnerability in the BitLocker Drive Encryption API, as used in sdclt.exe in Backup Manager in Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 and SP2, allows local users to gain privileges via a Trojan horse fveapi.dll file in the current working directory, as demonstrated by a directory that contains a Windows Backup Catalog (.wbcat) file, aka "Backup Manager Insecure Library Loading Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 08/27/2010 by Beenu Arora (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-3145 since 08/27/2010. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by Beenu Arora and been published even before and not after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51454 (MS11-001: Vulnerability in Windows Backup Manager Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2478935)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90676 (Microsoft Windows Backup Manager Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS11-001)).
A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10759.
