Multiple untrusted search path vulnerabilities in Microsoft Groove 2007 SP2 allow local users to gain privileges via a Trojan horse (1) mso.dll or (2) GroovePerfmon.dll file in the current working directory, as demonstrated by a directory that contains a Groove vCard (.vcg) or Groove Tool Archive (.gta) file, aka "Microsoft Groove Insecure Library Loading Vulnerability."

The weakness was shared 08/25/2010 by Beenu Arora (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-3146. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/21/2025).

A public exploit has been developed by Beenu Arora in ANSI C and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52584 (MS11-016: Vulnerability in Microsoft Groove Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2494047)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110145 (Microsoft Office Groove Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS11-016)).
