SBE.dll in the Stream Buffer Engine in Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 SP3, Windows Vista SP1 and SP2, Windows 7 Gold and SP1, and Windows Media Center TV Pack for Windows Vista does not properly parse Digital Video Recording (.dvr-ms) files, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted file, aka "DVR-MS Vulnerability."

The weakness was shared 03/09/2011 by Matthew Watchinski with Sourcefire VRT (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-0042 since 12/10/2010. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $25k-$100k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/21/2025).

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52583 (MS11-015: Vulnerabilities in Windows Media Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2510030)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins.
