A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (affected version not known). Affected is some unknown functionality of the component DirectShow/Windows Media. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a untrusted search path vulnerability. Untrusted search path vulnerability in DirectShow in Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 and SP2, Windows 7 Gold and SP1, Windows Server 2008 R2 and R2 SP1, and Windows Media Center TV Pack for Windows Vista allows local users to gain privileges via a Trojan horse DLL in the current working directory, as demonstrated by a directory that contains a Digital Video Recording (.dvr-ms), Windows Recorded TV Show (.wtv), or .mpg file, aka "DirectShow Insecure Library Loading Vulnerability."
The weakness was shared 03/08/2011 by Matthew Watchinski with Microsoft as MS11-015 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-0032 since 12/10/2010. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 03/19/2021). This vulnerability is assigned to T1574 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52583 (MS11-015: Vulnerabilities in Windows Media Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2510030)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90690 (Microsoft Windows Media Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS11-015)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS11-015 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
