Google Chrome before 8.0.552.237 and Chrome OS before 8.0.552.344 do not properly handle the printing of PDF documents, which allows user-assisted remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a multi-page document.
The weakness was disclosed 01/12/2011 by Sergey Glazunov (SkyLined) with Chromium Development Community (Website). The advisory is available at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-0472. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/11/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51511 (Google Chrome < 8.0.552.237 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118908 (Google Chrome Prior to 8.0.552.237 Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 8.0.552.209 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11301.
