A vulnerability has been found in Sun OpenOffice up to 3.2.1 (Office Suite Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code in the library LD_LIBRARY_PATH. soffice in OpenOffice.org (OOo) 3.x before 3.3 places a zero-length directory name in the LD_LIBRARY_PATH, which allows local users to gain privileges via a Trojan horse shared library in the current working directory.
The weakness was presented 01/26/2011 by Dan Rosenberg with Red Hat as Bug 641224 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2010-3689. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51887 (CentOS 4 : openoffice.org / openoffice.org2 (CESA-2011:0181)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155516 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for OpenOffice.org (ELSA-2011-0183)).
Upgrading to version 3.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
