Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in PHP up to 4.4.5 (Programming Language Software). This affects the function SplFileInfo::getType of the component Symbolic Links. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The SplFileInfo::getType function in the Standard PHP Library (SPL) extension in PHP before 5.3.4 on Windows does not properly detect symbolic links, which might make it easier for local users to conduct symlink attacks by leveraging cross-platform differences in the stat structure, related to lack of a FILE_ATTRIBUTE_REPARSE_POINT check.

The weakness was presented 02/02/2011 (Website). The advisory is shared at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-0754. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51140 (PHP 5.3 < 5.3.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.

Upgrading to version 4.4.6 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (65429), Tenable (51140), SecurityFocus (BID 46168†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-29626†).
