Details
A vulnerability was found in Mj2 Majordomo 2 up to 20110108 and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function _list_file_get in the library lib/Majordomo.pm of the file lib/Majordomo.pm. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
Directory traversal vulnerability in the _list_file_get function in lib/Majordomo.pm in Majordomo 2 before 20110131 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via .. (dot dot) sequences in the help command, as demonstrated using (1) a crafted email and (2) cgi-bin/mj_wwwusr in the web interface.
The weakness was released 02/02/2011 by Michael Brooks as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-0049 since 12/21/2010. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
A public exploit has been developed by Michael Brooks and been published 1 days after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52000 (Majordomo 2 _list_file_get() Function Traversal Arbitrary File Access), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.
Upgrading to version 20110109 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11797.
