Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Mj2 Majordomo 2 up to 20110202. This affects the function _list_file_get in the library lib/Majordomo.pm of the component lp Command. The manipulation of the argument extra with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
The _list_file_get function in lib/Majordomo.pm in Majordomo 2 20110203 and earlier allows remote attackers to conduct directory traversal attacks and read arbitrary files via a ./.../ sequence in the "extra" parameter to the help command, which causes the regular expression to produce .. (dot dot) sequences. NOTE: this vulnerability is due to an incomplete fix for CVE-2011-0049.
The weakness was published 03/15/2011 as Bug 631307 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-0063 since 12/21/2010. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52000 (Majordomo 2 _list_file_get() Function Traversal Arbitrary File Access), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
