Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in VideoLAN VLC Media Player up to 1.1.5 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function StripTags. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The StripTags function in (1) the USF decoder (modules/codec/subtitles/subsdec.c) and (2) the Text decoder (modules/codec/subtitles/subsusf.c) in VideoLAN VLC Media Player 1.1 before 1.1.6-rc allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a subtitle with an opening "<" without a closing ">" in an MKV file, which triggers heap memory corruption, as demonstrated using refined-australia-blu720p-sample.mkv.

The weakness was released 02/07/2011 by Harry Sintonen (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-0522. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by Harry Sintonen and been published even before and not after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51772 (VLC Media Player < 1.1.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119265 (VLC Media Player USF and Text Subtitles Decoders Buffer Overflow).

Upgrading to version 1.1.6-rc eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11419.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (65029), Exploit-DB (16108), Tenable (51772), SecurityFocus (BID 46008†) and OSVDB (72905†).
