A vulnerability was found in VideoLAN VLC Media Player up to 1.1.6.1 (Multimedia Player Software). It has been rated as very critical. This issue affects an unknown function of the file modules/demux/mkv/mkv.hpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. demux/mkv/mkv.hpp in the MKV demuxer plugin in VideoLAN VLC media player 1.1.6.1 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and execute arbitrary commands via a crafted MKV (WebM or Matroska) file that triggers memory corruption, related to "class mismatching" and the MKV_IS_ID macro.
The weakness was disclosed 01/30/2011 by Dan Rosenberg (Website). The advisory is shared at videolan.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2011-0531 since 01/20/2011. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/11/2025).
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51851 (VLC Media Player < 1.1.7 MKV Input Validation Vulnerability), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119236 (VLC Media Player MKV Demuxer "MKV_IS_ID" Vulnerability (VideoLAN-SA-1102)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
