Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 SP2 and SP3, SharePoint Server 2010 Gold and SP1, and Office Web Apps 2010 Gold and SP1 do not properly check permissions for search scopes, which allows remote authenticated users to obtain sensitive information or cause a denial of service (data modification) by changing a parameter in a search-scope URL, aka "SharePoint Search Scope Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 07/10/2012 by Yang Yang with Microsoft as MS12-050 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-1860 since 03/22/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59913 (MS12-050: Vulnerabilities in SharePoint Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2695502)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110185 (Microsoft SharePoint Privilege Escalation Vulnerability (MS12-050)).
Applying the patch MS12-050 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
