Untrusted search path vulnerability in VBE6.dll in Microsoft Office 2003 SP3, 2007 SP2 and SP3, and 2010 Gold and SP1; Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA); and Summit Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications SDK allows local users to gain privileges via a Trojan horse DLL in the current working directory, as demonstrated by a directory that contains a .docx file, aka "Visual Basic for Applications Insecure Library Loading Vulnerability," as exploited in the wild in July 2012.

The issue has been introduced in 11/17/2003. The weakness was shared 07/10/2012 by Bai Haowen with Huawei Security Labs as MS12-046 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-1854 since 03/22/2012. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a private exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1574 for this issue.

It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3158 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59909 (MS12-046: Vulnerability in Visual Basic for Applications Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2707960)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110184 (Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS12-046)).

Applying the patch MS12-046 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12386.
