The Shell in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2, R2, and R2 SP1, and Windows 7 Gold and SP1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted name for a (1) file or (2) directory, aka "Command Injection Vulnerability."

The weakness was published 07/10/2012 by Adi Cohen with IBM Security Systems - Application Security as MS12-048 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-0175 since 12/13/2011. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/21/2025). This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59911 (MS12-048: Vulnerability in Windows Shell Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2691442)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90818 (Microsoft Windows Shell Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS12-048)).

Applying the patch MS12-048 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12702.
