Microsoft Data Access Components up to 6.0 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Data Access Components up to 6.0. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Heap-based buffer overflow in Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8 SP1 and SP2 and Windows Data Access Components (WDAC) 6.0 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted XML data that triggers access to an uninitialized object in memory, aka "ADO Cachesize Heap Overflow RCE Vulnerability."

The weakness was released 07/10/2012 by TippingPoint with Zero Day Initiative as MS12-045 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-1891 since 03/22/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59908 (MS12-045: Vulnerability in Microsoft Data Access Components Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2698365)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90817 (Microsoft Data Access Components Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS12-045)).

Applying the patch MS12-045 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12432.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (76718), Tenable (59908), SecurityFocus (BID 54308†), OSVDB (83657†) and Secunia (SA49743†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
