win32k.sys in the kernel-mode drivers in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2, R2, and R2 SP1, and Windows 7 Gold and SP1 does not properly validate callback parameters during creation of a hook procedure, which allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application, aka "Win32k Incorrect Type Handling Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 07/10/2012 by Lufeng Li with Secunia Research as MS12-047 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-1893 since 03/22/2012. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a private exploit are known. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $5k-$25k (estimation calculated on 03/26/2021).
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59910 (MS12-047: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (2718523)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90816 (Microsoft Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (MS12-047)).
Applying the patch MS12-047 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
