Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 xfs_fs_geometry information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as problematic has been discovered in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9. This affects the function xfs_fs_geometry. The manipulation results in information disclosure. This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2011-0711. No exploit exists.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.16.9 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function xfs_fs_geometry. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

The xfs_fs_geometry function in fs/xfs/xfs_fsops.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.38-rc6-git3 does not initialize a certain structure member, which allows local users to obtain potentially sensitive information from kernel stack memory via an FSGEOMETRY_V1 ioctl call.

The issue has been introduced in 03/20/2006. The weakness was disclosed 03/01/2011 by Dan Rosenberg (Website). The advisory is shared for download at patchwork.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-0711 since 01/31/2011. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1793 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 55609 (CentOS 5 : kernel (CESA-2011:0927)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119903 (VMware ESX Server Multiple Vulnerabilities (VMSA-2012-0001)).

A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (55609), SecurityFocus (BID 46417†), OSVDB (70950†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-30641†). The entries VDB-56544, VDB-61057, VDB-57395 and VDB-57393 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
