Samba up to 3.2.12 File Descriptors memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as critical has been detected in Samba up to 3.2.12. This vulnerability affects unknown code of the component File Descriptors. This manipulation causes memory corruption. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2011-0719. There is no available exploit. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Samba up to 3.2.12 (File Transfer Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component File Descriptors. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

Samba 3.x before 3.3.15, 3.4.x before 3.4.12, and 3.5.x before 3.5.7 does not perform range checks for file descriptors before use of the FD_SET macro, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (stack memory corruption, and infinite loop or daemon crash) by opening a large number of files, related to (1) Winbind or (2) smbd.

The weakness was presented 03/01/2011 by Volker Lendecke with SerNet as Bug 678328 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-0719. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75447 (openSUSE Security Update : cifs-mount (openSUSE-SU-2011:0403-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119351 (HP-UX CIFS Server Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX02657)).

Upgrading to version 3.2.13 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (65724), Tenable (75447), SecurityFocus (BID 46597†), Secunia (SA43512†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1025132†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
