Wireshark up to 1.4.3 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Wireshark (Packet Analyzer Software). This vulnerability affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in wiretap/dct3trace.c in Wireshark 1.2.0 through 1.2.14 and 1.4.0 through 1.4.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a long record in a Nokia DCT3 trace file.

The weakness was disclosed 03/02/2011 as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2011-0713 since 01/31/2011. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52757 (CentOS 4 / 5 : wireshark (CESA-2011:0370)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155472 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Wireshark (ELSA-2011-0369)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (65780), Tenable (52757), SecurityFocus (BID 46416†), Secunia (SA43795†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1025148†). The entries VDB-55537, VDB-56948, VDB-56699 and VDB-56698 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
