OpenSSL up to 0.9.7c SSL/TLS Handshake denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in OpenSSL (Network Encryption Software). This affects an unknown function of the component SSL/TLS Handshake Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The do_change_cipher_spec function in OpenSSL 0.9.6c to 0.9.6k, and 0.9.7a to 0.9.7c, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted SSL/TLS handshake that triggers a null dereference.

The bug was discovered 03/17/2004. The weakness was disclosed 03/17/2004 by Stephen Henson with OpenSSL Team (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openssl.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-0079 since 01/19/2004. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

After 9 hours, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at codenomicon.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 817 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 14454 (GLSA-200403-03 : Multiple OpenSSL Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38257 (OpenSSL Denial of Service Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at openssl.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3464.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (15505), Tenable (14454), SecurityFocus (BID 9899†), OSVDB (4317†) and Secunia (SA18247†). Further details are available at uniras.gov.uk. The entries VDB-22378 and VDB-22379 are pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
